✦ Why this name
The Believers — from the opening verse: "Successful indeed are the believers."
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ said that ten verses were revealed which, if a person lives up to them, will bring him into Paradise — and then recited the opening of this surah.
✦ The story
It begins with a definition. Who has actually succeeded? Those humble in prayer, who turn away from empty talk, who give zakah, who guard their chastity, who keep their trusts and their promises, and who guard their prayers. Eleven verses, and a whole life described.
Then the surah does something striking: it describes how a human being is made, stage by stage — a drop, a clinging form, a lump, bones, then flesh over the bones — and breaks off into praise mid-sentence: *"so blessed is Allah, the best of creators."*
The rest is prophets meeting the same objection in every generation, and it ends with a question that lands like a hand on the shoulder: *"Did you think that We created you aimlessly, and that you would not be returned to Us?"*
