Unusual in containing both Meccan and Madinan passages. It includes the first permission given to the believers to fight back after years of being beaten without recourse.
✦ The story
The surah opens by shaking the reader awake: the earthquake of the Hour, nursing mothers forgetting their infants. Then it argues for resurrection from the most ordinary evidence available — a human being grown from a drop, and dry ground that greens after rain. If you have seen a dead field come back, you have already seen the answer.
Then Hajj: Ibrahim told to call people to a House in an empty valley, and they come, on foot and on lean camels, from every distant pass. The surah is clear that nothing physical reaches Allah — *"neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is your God-consciousness."*
And its sharpest line is about a kind of blindness that has nothing to do with eyes: *"it is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts inside the chests."*
