The Prophets — sixteen of them pass through this surah, one after another.
✦ When it came
Meccan, in the middle period. The rejection has settled into ridicule, and the surah answers it by showing that this has always been the pattern.
✦ The story
The surah moves like a roll call. Ibrahim smashing the idols and then pointing at the largest one and saying "ask them"; Nuh rescued; Dawud and Sulayman judging a case about a field of sheep; Ayyub calling out from his illness; Yunus in the darkness; Zakariyya asking not to be left alone; Maryam guarded.
Each story is only a few verses long, because the point is the pattern, not the detail. Every one of them was a human being under pressure who called on Allah and was answered. And at the end of the roll call the surah names what all of it was for: *"We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds."*
