✦ Why this name
The Cow — from the story in verses 67–73, where the Children of Israel were told to sacrifice a cow and kept asking questions instead of obeying.
✦ When it came
The first long surah revealed in Madinah, and revealed in stages across many years of the Prophet's ﷺ time there. It is the constitution of a community that has just been given a home: a new society learning who it is, who is beside it, and how to live.
✦ The story
The longest surah in the Quran opens by sorting humanity into three: those who believe, those who openly reject, and — described at greatest length — those who say they believe but do not. Then it goes back to the beginning: Adam, taught the names, honoured by the angels, and warned about the whisper.
The long middle is a conversation with the Children of Israel — a people given prophets, a book, and rescue at the sea, who argued, asked for more, and drifted. It is not told to shame them. It is told as a mirror: *this is what happens to a community that receives guidance and grows casual with it.* Right in the middle comes the turning of the qiblah toward Makkah — a new community given its own direction and named "a middle nation, witnesses over mankind."
The last third is law and life: fasting, pilgrimage, marriage, divorce, orphans, war, wills — and the longest verse in the Quran, about writing down a debt. The surah ends with two verses of pure du'a, gifted, the Prophet ﷺ said, from beneath the Throne.

- 255Ayat al-Kursi — the greatest verse in the Quran, describing Allah's life, knowledge, and dominion in a single breath.
- 286"Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear." The last verse, and the du'a a believer returns to whenever life feels too heavy.
- 186"When My servants ask you about Me — I am near." Placed in the middle of the fasting verses, unannounced, like a hand on the shoulder.

✦ Where it sits
Al-Baqarah and Aal-'Imran are called az-Zahrawan, "the two luminous ones" — read together they are one long lesson on carrying a covenant.
