✦ Why this name

Mary — the only woman named in the Quran, and the only surah bearing a woman's name.

✦ When it came

Meccan, before the migration to Abyssinia. Ja'far ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه recited its opening to the Negus of Abyssinia, and the Christian king wept and refused to hand the Muslims over.

✦ The story

A surah of parents and children, and it begins in a whisper. Zakariyya عليه السلام, old, his bones weakened and his head aflame with white hair, calls on his Lord *in secret* — because he does not want anyone to hear how much he wants a son. He is given Yahya عليه السلام.

Then Maryam عليها السلام, alone, in labour beneath a palm tree, in pain and terrified of what people will say: *"I wish I had died before this and been in oblivion, forgotten."* The Quran does not tidy her despair away. And the instruction she is given is not to endure passively but to act — shake the trunk toward you, eat, drink, and be comforted.

Then Ibrahim عليه السلام speaking to a father who threatens to stone him, and answering with *"Peace be upon you; I will ask forgiveness for you."*

The surah's rhythm is soft, its rhyme short, and its subject is the tenderness between generations — and what happens when generations abandon prayer.

✦ How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-15

    A du'a said quietly

Zakariyya asking in secret for an heir, and Yahya given wisdom while still a child.

  2. AYAH 16-40

    Maryam and the palm tree

The birth, the fear, the instruction to shake the trunk — and an infant who speaks in her defence.

  3. AYAH 41-50

    Ibrahim and his father

A son threatened with stoning who answers with peace and a promise to pray for him.

  4. AYAH 51-65

    The prophets in one line

Musa, Isma'il, Idris — and then the generations after them who abandoned prayer and followed desires.

  5. AYAH 96

The Most Merciful will appoint love

For those who believe and do righteous deeds, affection placed in the hearts of others.
