✦ Why this name
The Cave — from the young men who hid in a cave to protect their faith, and slept there for three hundred years.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Quraysh sent to the rabbis of Madinah for questions to test the Prophet ﷺ, and were given three: the sleepers, the traveller who reached the ends of the earth, and the soul. The answer was delayed until he stopped saying it would come tomorrow without saying "if Allah wills."
✦ The story
Four stories, and each one is a trial of a different thing.
**Faith:** young men in a city that would kill them for believing, who walk into a cave and hand the matter to Allah — *"Our Lord, give us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance."* They wake three centuries later.
**Wealth:** two men, one with two gardens and a river between them, who walks into his garden and says *I do not think this will ever perish.* By morning it is bare earth, and he is turning his hands over in regret.
**Knowledge:** Musa عليه السلام travelling to learn from a servant of Allah, and being told he will not be able to bear it. A boat damaged, a boy killed, a wall repaired for nothing — three acts that look like injustice until the reasons are given.
**Power:** Dhul-Qarnayn, given reach over the earth, who builds a barrier and refuses to take credit: *"This is a mercy from my Lord."*
The Prophet ﷺ told us to read it every Friday, and that whoever memorises its first ten verses is protected from the Dajjal — the trial that combines all four.
