✦ Why this name
The Bee — from verses 68–69, where Allah reveals to the bee where to build, and from its bellies comes a drink of varying colours in which there is healing.
✦ When it came
Meccan, mostly late in the period; a few verses at the end relate to the persecution and the killing of Hamzah رضي الله عنه at Uhud. It is sometimes called Surat an-Ni'am — the surah of blessings.
✦ The story
This surah counts. Cattle giving warmth and food. Horses and mules to ride. Rain that grows olives, palms, grapes. Night and day, stars for navigation, the sea with its fresh fish and its ornaments. Mountains as anchors. Milk, *pure and pleasant*, drawn from between waste and blood. Honey from a creature Allah taught directly. And then, halfway through the list: *"If you tried to count the favours of Allah, you could not enumerate them."*
Then it turns to what people do with all this. Some assign daughters to Allah while resenting them for themselves — the surah's sharpest passage, describing a father's face darkening at the news of a girl. Some invent food laws. Some worship things that create nothing.
And near the end comes a verse so complete that a caliph made it the closing line of every Friday sermon: *"Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression."*
