Abraham — named for the du'a of Ibrahim عليه السلام in verses 35–41, made standing beside the House he had just built.
✦ When it came
Meccan, in the later years. The surah is addressed to a people living in the city Ibrahim عليه السلام founded, praying to idols in the sanctuary he built for the worship of One God.
✦ The story
The surah opens with the Quran's purpose stated in one line: *a Book We revealed to you to bring people out of darkness into light.* Every prophet, it then notes, was sent speaking the language of his own people — the message meets you where you are.
Its central image is two trees. A good word is like a good tree: roots firm, branches in the sky, giving fruit in every season. A corrupt word is a tree torn up from the surface of the earth, with no stability at all. The whole surah is about which one you are growing.
It ends with Ibrahim عليه السلام standing where Makkah now stands and praying — for the city to be secure, for his descendants to establish prayer, for hearts to incline toward them, and for himself: *"My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants too."* He is an old man asking for prayer, not for property.
