Joseph — the only surah devoted to a single continuous story from beginning to end.
✦ When it came
Meccan, in the year of grief, after the Prophet ﷺ lost both Khadijah رضي الله عنها and his uncle Abu Talib, and after Ta'if turned him away. A surah about a beloved son thrown into a well and raised to power, given to a man at his lowest point.
✦ The story
The Quran calls it *"the best of stories"* — and it is the only one it tells in full, in order, from the first scene to the last.
A boy dreams of eleven stars, the sun and the moon bowing. His father tells him not to tell his brothers. They throw him in a well anyway, and bring home a shirt with false blood. Ya'qub عليه السلام, who is not fooled, answers with two words that became a proverb: *fa-sabrun jamil* — beautiful patience.
Then Egypt. A slave, then trusted; tempted, then imprisoned for refusing; a dream-interpreter in a cell; and finally the man who saves a country from famine. His brothers arrive hungry, not recognising him, and he holds every card. What he says is the reason the story is told: *"No blame will there be upon you today."*
It is a story about how a thing that looks like ruin is, from a higher vantage, the road. Every step down was a step toward the throne.
