✦ Why this name

The Help — an-Nasr, the victory and the help of Allah. It is also called at-Tawdi', "the Farewell".

✦ When it came

Madinan, and among the last surahs revealed — some say the last complete one. It came near the end of the Prophet's ﷺ life.

✦ The story

Three verses about a triumph, and none of them is triumphant.

*"When the victory of Allah has come, and the conquest, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes — then exalt your Lord with praise, and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance."*

At the moment of complete success: glorify, praise, and *ask forgiveness*.

'Umar رضي الله عنه asked a gathering of elders what they made of it, and they spoke about victory. Then he asked Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما, who said: it is the Prophet's ﷺ death, announced to him. 'Umar said: I know of it only what you know.

The Prophet ﷺ died shortly after.

✦ How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-2

    When it comes

Victory, conquest, and people entering in crowds.

  2. AYAH 3
