✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الماعون
Al-Ma'un
✦ Why this name
Small Kindnesses — al-Ma'un, the everyday items people lend each other: a pot, a bucket, a tool.
✦ When it came
Meccan. Seven verses that redefine what it means to deny the religion.
✦ The story
*"Have you seen the one who denies the religion? That is the one who drives away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor."*
Not someone who argues about theology. Someone who pushes a child away and does not care whether the poor eat. That is what denial looks like, in practice.
Then the surah turns to people who *do* pray: *"So woe to those who pray — those who are heedless of their prayer, those who make show of it."*
And it ends on the smallest possible thing: *"and withhold small kindnesses."* Not charity. The pot you would not lend. The favour you would not do.
A person can pray and still fail this surah.
