✦ Why this name

The Elephant — al-Fil, the army that came to destroy the Ka'bah with elephants, in the year the Prophet ﷺ was born.

✦ When it came

Meccan. Abrahah marched on Makkah with an army including elephants. The event was living memory for the older Makkans — they dated years by it.

✦ The story

*"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan go astray?"*

The greatest army the region had seen, coming to demolish the House. And the defence sent against it was: birds.

*"And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay, and made them like eaten straw."*

The whole surah is five verses long, and it never mentions a single human defender. 'Abd al-Muttalib had said: the House has an Owner who will protect it. He was right.

✦ Where it sits

Al-Fil and Quraysh are read together — the House protected, and then the security and provision the Quraysh enjoyed because of it.
