Meccan, in the later years there. The rejection has hardened, and the surah answers a specific accusation: that the Quran was made up.
✦ The story
The surah turns again and again to one detail: the sea. A ship in a good wind, everyone content — then the storm hits, and suddenly everyone on board is calling on Allah alone, promising gratitude. Then the shore, and the forgetting. It is the Quran's clearest picture of how belief hides inside people who say they have none.
Around that runs the answer to the accusation. *Bring a surah like it, then.* And an instruction to the Prophet ﷺ that must have been hard to hear: your job is to deliver, not to compel. *"Would you compel people to become believers?"*
Yunus عليه السلام is named but not told in full — only the outcome, and it is unique in the Quran. Every other town that rejected its messenger was destroyed. His believed while there was still time, and the punishment was lifted. The surah holds that up deliberately: the door is open until it isn't.
