✦ Why this name
The Opening — it opens the mushaf, and it opens every unit of every prayer.
✦ When it came
Among the earliest revelations in Mecca. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the greatest surah in the Quran" and prayer is not complete without it, so a Muslim recites it more than any other passage in their life.
✦ The story
Seven verses that teach a person how to speak to their Lord.
It begins not with a request but with recognition: Allah is praised, He is the Lord of everything that exists, He is Mercy itself, and He owns the Day when accounts are settled. Only after that recognition does the conversation turn — *"You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help"* — and only after that does the asking begin.
And what is asked for is not wealth or safety. It is the straight path, and the company of those who walked it before. The whole Quran that follows is the answer to this one request.

Who Allah is, before anything is asked of Him: Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

The verse that puts the whole of life in proportion — everything is answered for.

The turn to "You"
The surah stops speaking about Allah and starts speaking to Him. Worship and reliance are given to Him alone.

Guidance to the straight path, and the company of those who received it — not those who earned anger or lost their way.
