Surah Al-Layl

Surah 92 · The Night · 21 verses · meccan

The Night — al-Layl, sworn by in the opening verse.

The story

Allah says: if you give and you believe, He will make good things easier for you. And if you hold on tight to everything and think you do not need anyone, He lets the hard road get easier too. You choose the road.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-4

    Your efforts are diverse

Night, day, and the creation of male and female — and human striving described as scattered.

  2. AYAH 5-13

    Two easings

Give and believe, or withhold and deny — and the path made smooth either way.

  3. AYAH 14-21

    Seeking only His face

The most righteous one, giving without expecting anything back.

Verses to carry

  • 92:7"We will ease him toward ease."
  • 92:10"We will ease him toward difficulty." The same mechanism, running the other way.
  • 92:19"Not giving as payment for a favour from anyone."

Remember this

Give without expecting a thank you. Give just because Allah is watching.

Talk about it

Have you ever given something without anyone knowing it was you?
