Surah Al-Buruj

Surah 85 · The Mansions of the Stars · 22 verses · meccan

The Great Stars — al-Buruj, the constellations sworn by in the opening verse.

The story

Long ago, some people believed in Allah and were told to stop or be thrown into a fire. They did not stop. Allah told their story so that everyone would know how brave they were.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-10

    The people of the ditch

The trench, the fire, the spectators — and the single reason for their hatred.

  2. AYAH 11-16

    The seizing of your Lord

The Originator, the Loving, the Owner of the Throne — who does whatever He intends.

  3. AYAH 17-22

    Preserved

Pharaoh and Thamud recalled, and a Quran in a preserved tablet.

Verses to carry

  • 85:8"They resented them only because they believed in Allah." The whole crime, stated.
  • 85:14"And He is the Forgiving, the Loving." Al-Wadud — placed right after the story of the burning.
  • 85:22"In a preserved tablet." Beyond anyone's reach.

Remember this

Right after that terrible story, Allah calls Himself "the Loving". He never stopped loving them.

Talk about it

What is the bravest thing you can imagine doing?
