Surah Al-Inshiqaq

Surah 84 · The Sundering · 25 verses · meccan

The Splitting Open — al-Inshiqaq, the sky splitting and listening to its Lord.

The story

Everybody is working hard at something. This surah says: you are walking towards Allah your whole life, and one day you will meet Him. So it is worth thinking about which way you are walking.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-5

    Listening, as it must

The sky and the earth described as obedient.

  2. AYAH 6-15

    Labouring toward your Lord

The exertion of every life, and the two ways the record is received.

  3. AYAH 16-25

    Stage after stage

The oath by twilight, night, and the full moon — and a life that moves in phases.

Verses to carry

  • 84:6"O mankind, you are labouring toward your Lord with exertion, and you will meet Him."
  • 84:19"You will surely embark upon stage after stage."
  • 84:25The exception: those who believe and do righteous deeds have a reward uninterrupted.

Remember this

Life happens in stages — you will not always be the age you are now.
