Surah An-Naba
Surah 78 · The Tidings · 40 verses · meccan
The Great News — an-Naba, the thing the Makkans kept arguing about: the resurrection.
The story
People kept arguing about whether Allah could really bring everyone back to life. So Allah answered by listing what He already made: mountains like tent pegs, night like a blanket, and sleep so you can rest.
How it unfolds
AYAH 1-5
The argument
The question quoted, and the answer promised twice over.
AYAH 6-16
Look what you were given
The bed, the pegs, sleep, night, day, the seven heavens, the lamp, and the rain.
AYAH 17-40
An appointed time
The horn, the sky opened as gateways, and gardens with grapevines for the God-conscious.
Verses to carry
- 78:9"And We made your sleep a means for rest." Sleep named as a mercy.
- 78:17"Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time."
- 78:40"And the disbeliever will say: Oh, I wish I were dust."
Remember this
Sleep is a gift from Allah. Say bismillah when you go to bed tonight.
Talk about it
Allah calls the mountains "pegs", like tent pegs holding the earth down. What else looks like something else?
