Surah Al-Mursalat
Surah 77 · The Emissaries · 50 verses · meccan
Those Sent Forth — al-Mursalat, sworn by in the opening verse.
The story
This surah asks lots of questions to make you think: who made the earth able to hold everyone who is alive and everyone who has died? Who put the mountains there? Who gave you fresh water to drink?
How it unfolds
AYAH 1-15
The oaths
Winds sent forth, and the first of ten repetitions of the refrain.
AYAH 16-28
Were you not made
A fluid, a firm place, the earth as container, mountains, sweet water.
AYAH 29-50
A Day of no speech
No permission to speak, no excuse accepted — and the closing question.
Verses to carry
- 77:20"Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?"
- 77:25"Have We not made the earth a container of the living and the dead?"
- 77:50"So in what statement after this will they believe?" The surah's last word — a question.
Remember this
The earth holds all of us. Allah made it exactly right for that.
Talk about it
Where does the water you drink actually come from?
