Surah Al-Muddaththir

Surah 74 · The Cloaked One · 56 verses · meccan

The Cloaked One — al-Muddaththir, the second surah to address the Prophet ﷺ in that state.

The story

This is where Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to get up and start telling everyone about Him. Later in the surah, people in trouble are asked what went wrong — and the first two things they say are: we did not pray, and we did not feed poor people.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-7

    Arise and warn

Five opening commands, and patience for the Lord's sake.

  2. AYAH 11-31

    The man who assessed

A hostile mind traced step by step to its conclusion.

  3. AYAH 38-56

    What brought you here

The four answers of the guilty — beginning with prayer and feeding the poor.

Verses to carry

  • 74:38"Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained."
  • 74:43"We were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor." The first two answers given by the guilty.
  • 74:6"And do not confer favour to acquire more." Giving without an angle.

Remember this

Give without expecting anything back. That is what Allah asked for.

Talk about it

When you help someone, do you expect something in return? What if you did not?
