Surah Al-Mumtahanah

Surah 60 · She that is to be examined · 13 verses · medinan

The Woman to be Examined — al-Mumtahanah, from verse 10, about women who migrated to Madinah and whose faith was to be assessed.

The story

Allah says here that we should be kind and fair to people who are not Muslim, as long as they are not fighting us. Being fair to everyone is something Allah loves.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-6

    Divided loyalty

The intercepted letter, and Ibrahim named as the excellent example.

  2. AYAH 7-9

    Two different cases

Those who fight you, and those who do not — justice and kindness owed to the second.

  3. AYAH 10-13

    Migrating women

Assessment of their faith, and the pledge the Prophet ﷺ took from women.

Verses to carry

  • 60:8"Allah does not forbid you from being righteous and just toward those who do not fight you." The verse that settles the question.
  • 60:7"Perhaps Allah will put between you and those you have been enemies with affection."
  • 60:4"There has already been an excellent pattern for you in Ibrahim."

Remember this

Being a good Muslim means being fair and kind to everyone, not just to people like you.

Talk about it

Do you have a friend who is not Muslim? What do you like about them?
