Surah An-Najm
Surah 53 · The Star · 62 verses · meccan
The Star — an-Najm, sworn by in the first verse. It was the first surah recited publicly aloud in Makkah.
The story
This surah says something very fair: you only get what you work for, and nobody has to carry anyone else's mistakes. Your effort is your own, and Allah always sees it.
How it unfolds
AYAH 1-18
Not from desire
The source of the revelation, and the vision at the lote tree of the utmost boundary.
AYAH 19-30
Names you invented
The idols named by ancestors, with no authority sent down for them.
AYAH 36-42
The scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa
Four principles: no shared burdens, only what you strive for, effort seen, repayment in full.
AYAH 43-62
He is the Lord of Sirius
Laughter and weeping, death and life, male and female — and the prostration that closes the surah.
Verses to carry
- 53:39"And that there is not for man except that for which he strives."
- 53:32"So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He knows best who fears Him."
- 53:3"Nor does he speak from his own desire."
Remember this
Never say you are better than someone else. Only Allah knows what is really in a person's heart.
Talk about it
What is something you worked really hard at? Did anyone notice? Allah did.
