Surah Fussilat

Surah 41 · Explained in Detail · 54 verses · meccan

Explained in Detail — Fussilat, from verse 3: a Book whose verses are clearly detailed. Also called Ha-Mim as-Sajdah.

The story

This surah gives amazing advice: when someone is horrible to you, be extra good to them. Allah says the person who was your enemy can turn into a close friend. But it warns you — this is hard, and only patient people manage it.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-12

    A Book detailed

Verses made clear in Arabic, and hearts that say "our hearts are within coverings."

  2. AYAH 19-24

    Skin as witness

On the Day when hearing, sight, and skin testify against their owner.

  3. AYAH 30-32

    Stay upright

Angels descending on those who declared and then stood firm.

  4. AYAH 33-36

    Repel with what is better

The best speech, the best response to hostility, and the refuge to take when Shaytan provokes.

Verses to carry

  • 41:34"Repel evil with what is better, and the one between you and whom there was enmity will become a devoted friend."
  • 41:33"Who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness?"
  • 41:30"Those who say our Lord is Allah and then remain upright — the angels descend on them: do not fear, and do not grieve."

Remember this

Being kind to someone who was mean to you is one of the strongest things you can do.

Talk about it

Can you think of someone who is unkind to you? What is one good thing you could do for them?
