Surah Al-Hajj

Surah 22 · The Pilgrimage · 78 verses · medinan

The Pilgrimage — from the call in verse 27: "Proclaim to the people the Hajj."

The story

Long ago Allah told Ibrahim عليه السلام to call people to come to the Ka'bah. He was standing in an empty desert valley — and people have been coming ever since, from every country in the world.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-24

    The Hour

The earthquake, and then the argument for resurrection from a drop of fluid and from rain on dead earth.

  2. AYAH 25-37

    The call to the House

Ibrahim's proclamation, pilgrims arriving from every distant pass, and sacrifice that reaches Allah only as taqwa.

  3. AYAH 38-41

    Permission to defend

The first permission to fight back, given to people driven from their homes for saying "our Lord is Allah".

  4. AYAH 42-78

    Blind hearts

Ruined towns still standing as evidence, and the verse about eyes that see while hearts do not.

Verses to carry

  • 22:46"It is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts which are within the breasts."
  • 22:37"Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is your righteousness."
  • 22:27"Proclaim to the people the Hajj" — the call that still fills a valley every year.

Remember this

Allah does not need our food or our things. What reaches Him is what is in our hearts.

Talk about it

Millions of people go to Hajj every year from everywhere on earth. Why do you think Allah wants everyone together in one place?
