Surah Maryam
Surah 19 · Mary · 98 verses · meccan
Mary — the only woman named in the Quran, and the only surah bearing a woman's name.
The story
Maryam عليها السلام was all alone under a palm tree when baby 'Isa عليه السلام was born, and she was very frightened. Allah told her to shake the tree so fresh dates would fall, and not to be sad. Then when people accused her, the baby spoke and defended his mother.
How it unfolds
AYAH 1-15
A du'a said quietly
Zakariyya asking in secret for an heir, and Yahya given wisdom while still a child.
AYAH 16-40
Maryam and the palm tree
The birth, the fear, the instruction to shake the trunk — and an infant who speaks in her defence.
AYAH 41-50
Ibrahim and his father
A son threatened with stoning who answers with peace and a promise to pray for him.
AYAH 51-65
The prophets in one line
Musa, Isma'il, Idris — and then the generations after them who abandoned prayer and followed desires.
AYAH 96
The Most Merciful will appoint love
For those who believe and do righteous deeds, affection placed in the hearts of others.
Verses to carry
- 19:96"The Most Merciful will appoint for them affection." Love in people's hearts as a gift, not a strategy.
- 19:4"My bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white — and never have I been unhappy in my supplication to You."
- 19:47Ibrahim to the father who threatened him: "Peace be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord."
Remember this
When you are frightened and alone, Allah is right there — and He often tells us to do one small thing, and then helps with the rest.
Talk about it
Zakariyya عليه السلام made his du'a quietly so nobody would hear. Do you have a du'a you only tell Allah?
