Surah Al-Ma'un
Surah 107 · The Small kindnesses · 7 verses · meccan
Small Kindnesses — al-Ma'un, the everyday items people lend each other: a pot, a bucket, a tool.
The story
Allah asks: do you know who really does not believe? It is the person who pushes away a child with no parents, and does not care if hungry people eat — and who will not even lend a neighbour a bucket.
How it unfolds
AYAH 1-3
What denial looks like
The orphan driven away, and the poor left unfed.
AYAH 4-6
Praying, heedlessly
Woe to those who pray without attention, and for show.
AYAH 7
Small kindnesses
The last verse, and the smallest thing in the surah.
Verses to carry
- 107:2"That is the one who drives away the orphan." Denial defined by behaviour, not belief.
- 107:5"Those who are heedless of their prayer."
- 107:7"And withhold small kindnesses."
Remember this
Lending someone something small is part of your religion. Really.
Talk about it
Has anyone asked to borrow something from you lately? What did you do?
