Surah Yunus

Surah 10 · Jonah · 109 verses · meccan

Jonah — named for the one prophet whose people believed at the last moment and were spared, mentioned in verse 98.

The story

This surah is about people on a ship. When the storm comes and they are scared, they pray to Allah with all their heart. But when they reach dry land safely, some of them forget all about Him. It also tells us about Yunus عليه السلام, whose people said sorry to Allah just in time.

How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-20

    The accusation answered

"Bring a surah like it" — the Quran staking its claim on what it is.

  2. AYAH 21-33

    The ship and the storm

Sincerity found in danger and lost on dry land — the surah's recurring image.

  3. AYAH 99-103

    No compulsion in belief

"Would you compel people to become believers?" — the limits of a messenger's task.

  4. AYAH 90-98

    The town that was spared

Pharaoh believing too late at the sea, and Yunus's people believing just in time.

Verses to carry

  • 10:62"Unquestionably, the allies of Allah — no fear will there be upon them, nor will they grieve."
  • 10:57"A healing for what is in the breasts" — the Quran describing itself as medicine for the heart.
  • 10:99"Would you compel people to become believers?" Faith that is forced is not faith.

Remember this

Remember Allah when things are good, not only when you are frightened.

Talk about it

Do you pray more when you want something? What would it be like to thank Allah just as much when everything is fine?
